St. Patrick’s Day

Party

What the St Patrick's range covers

St Patrick's Day is a single date with an unusually wide spread of buyers. It is a national holiday in Ireland, a bar, club and parade day across North America, Britain and Australia, and a spring retail theme almost everywhere else, which means the same ten groups sell into venues, parades, supermarkets and offices in the same season. The range is built as complete solutions rather than as raw materials: shamrock decorations, green hats and beards, green, white and orange balloons and banners, tableware, party sunglasses and bow ties, gold coin chocolates and coin bags, rainbow and pot of gold decorations, photo props, Irish flag bunting, and green streamers. The buying pattern differs from a gift-led occasion. There is very little gift packaging and a great deal of venue dressing: bars, restaurants, clubs, retail frontage, beer gardens, offices and parade routes. The costume and photo element is heavier than on any other spring date, and the colour discipline is tighter, because an off-green reads as a mistake to this customer. Buyers are beverage and bar wholesalers, party and novelty wholesalers, supermarkets and convenience chains, licensed trade suppliers, and event and parade organisers.

The venue types, the people they serve, and what each one buys

The date runs through several venue types, and each one buys a different configuration. A bar or pub dresses the counter, the back bar, the ceiling and the entrance, and buys in kits sized by venue so that one carton dresses one room, which is why this range carries venue-count packs alongside piece-count packs. A restaurant or club adds table centrepieces, tableware and a photo corner. A supermarket or convenience chain wants retail-ready single-purchase kits with a barcode and a header card, sold from a spring endcap for two to three weeks. A licensed trade wholesaler orders across all ten groups and breaks them down into smaller units for its own customers. An event or parade organiser buys identity items in larger runs: hats, headbands, tattoos, face stickers, beads and flags, sized to a crowd rather than to a table. Offices, schools and community groups buy small quantities of the same items. The date is fixed at 17 March, but the selling front is not: retail runs from late February, venues dress in the week before, and the costume items sell in the last few days. Where the date falls close to a weekend, venue spend rises noticeably and parade spend shifts to the day that is actually taken off.

How venue kits attach to each other, and how the green palette is built

Every group here attaches to at least two others, and the attachment is the sellable unit. A venue kit pulls in balloons, banners, garland, string lights and table centrepieces. A party hat set pulls in tattoos, face stickers, photo props and a backdrop. A retail kit combines a garland, a small balloon set and a hat set so that one purchase makes a visible corner in a shop. Colour is where this category is won or lost. The core is a true mid green, not a yellow-green and not a dark forest green, with white as the second colour and gold as the accent. A parade or family programme adds a brighter green and a shamrock print, while a licensed trade programme leans to dark green, gold and black for a pub interior. Rainbow and gold coin items sit deliberately outside the green core as a second, louder story for family and parade use. Keep a programme to two greens, white and gold, and specify Pantone references, because the same green reads differently in dyed fabric, printed paper, dipped latex, foil film, LED light and printed glassware. A consistent palette across all ten groups is what makes a venue look dressed rather than decorated.

The three order tiers, and how a venue is sized instead of a table

The range is built in three tiers. The entry tier is a small single-use consumer kit such as a hat set, a bunting or a tattoo pack with a printed header card. The mid tier is the venue or wholesale set, with larger counts and fewer components, built so a bar or restaurant can dress itself without a designer. The premium tier is a print-and-brand programme: a named venue kit with printed signs, branded glassware and matched bunting, and it carries most of the customisation. Quantity maths follows the room rather than the guest list, and a few conversions make an order concrete. A fitted venue needs roughly one centrepiece per table, one kit per ten running metres of counter or ceiling, and one entrance kit per door. Balloon garlands take about twelve to fifteen balloons per running metre, so a 3 m arch is roughly ninety pieces. A parade or crowd programme needs one identity item per person, and a family kit is normally one hat set plus one tattoo pack per four people. A retail endcap is planned backwards from the number of kits on display and the units per carton. Send the number of venues, covers or retail doors you are planning for and we will convert it into kit counts, cartons and a loading plan, subject to confirmation on the actual order.

Branding a venue through bunting, glassware, signs and props

Customisation here is mostly brand marking, and it splits into four processes. Screen printing covers bunting, flags, banners, table runners and fabric items in one to four colours. Digital printing carries photographic artwork on backdrops, photo props, signs and window graphics, and it is the right route for shorter runs with a full-colour image. Pad printing and heat transfer put a logo on balloons, coasters, plastic and glass items, and on the small hard goods a bar actually hands to a customer. Hot stamping and foil blocking add a venue name, a date or a crest to signs, menus, coasters and boxed sets. Artwork requirements are consistent: vector files such as AI, EPS or PDF with fonts outlined, 3 mm bleed on printed paper, die lines on packaging, and Pantone references rather than screen colours. Two limits are worth designing around. Shamrock artwork needs a clean silhouette at small sizes, because a detailed leaf loses its shape on a sticker or on a small balloon. LED items and printed glass carry a smaller usable print area than a screen mock-up suggests. Send artwork at enquiry stage and we will confirm what each process holds, on which substrate, and at what minimum.

Packing, bulky cargo, and how mixed-container loading works

Packing is quoted as an inner bag or inner box, then the export carton, and this range mixes two freight behaviours. Paper, balloons, banners, garland, hats, beads and flags cube out and are charged against volume rather than weight. Glassware, ceramic mugs, resin figurines, candle holders and metal barware weigh out and need dividers, moulded pulp or honeycomb board to survive handling. Because so much of this range is bulky, a single-category container is inefficient, and mixed loading against one set of shipping documents and one shipping date is the normal way to make the freight work, usually by pairing these lines with denser categories. Typical formats are 20 to 50 kits per carton for boxed venue and retail kits, 100 to 200 pieces per carton for tableware, paper and identity items, and one pallet per colour or per SKU family where a display needs to travel together. Label cartons by venue size or by retail door so a delivery can be split without unpacking it, and agree case marks, barcodes and carton dimensions before production. For palletised deliveries, confirm the pallet height and the maximum carton weight your warehouse can take before the packing specification is fixed. Carton counts, pallet counts and loading figures are industry ranges and subject to confirmation on the actual order.

MOQ, sampling, lead time and the March calendar

Minimum order depends on the group. Small items such as tattoos, face stickers, beads and picks start around 200 to 500 pieces per design. Paper tableware, banners, flags and bunting start around 1,000 to 3,000 pieces per design. Hat sets, prop sets and table sets start around 300 to 1,000 sets, and venue kits are quoted in venue multiples so that one carton dresses one room. Boxed retail kits and custom printed or branded items sit above stock minimums and are quoted against artwork. Sampling is usually five to ten days for stock items and ten to fifteen days where printed or branded components are involved, with one or two revision rounds. Stock production ships in 15 to 25 days, and custom printed or private-label orders run 30 to 45 days from sample approval. The calendar is the hard constraint here. St Patrick's Day follows Chinese New Year, which closes factories for one to three weeks in January or February and books capacity out on both sides. For 17 March, production normally starts after the holiday, so orders should be confirmed before the shutdown and print approvals held in advance, with air freight kept as a contingency for late venue programmes. All MOQ, sampling and lead-time figures are industry ranges and subject to confirmation on the actual order.

Compliance: four families, plus skin contact and batteries

Compliance here splits into four families, and the four are not interchangeable. Paper plates, cups, napkins and any item that touches food or drink can be produced to FDA or LFGB requirements with migration testing and a declaration of conformity, and a printed logo on drinkware sits in the same family. Costume and novelty items aimed at children, such as toy hats, toy boppers and small plastic props, can be produced to EN 71-1, EN 71-2 and EN 71-3, or to CPSIA and ASTM F963 for the United States. Temporary tattoos, face stickers, face paints, glitter gels and body gems are skin contact items and belong to cosmetic and skin-contact rules rather than to toy rules, with ingredient documentation and labelling as your market requires. Decorative plastics, coated fabric and printed film fall under REACH and phthalate restrictions. Battery-powered lighting, including button-cell products, is electrical goods with its own safety standard, additional button-cell packaging and warning obligations, and its own transport documents. Candles, flame-effect pieces and open-flame decoration are restricted in many venues and are subject to carrier and destination-market requirements, so confirm before booking rather than assuming a standard cargo lane. Ask us for the current test report for the specific item.

Quality control, and five things buyers get wrong

Quality control runs in four steps. A pre-production sample is approved against your artwork and specification before material is cut. Inline checks cover print colour, colour consistency across batches, shamrock shape and finish. Final inspection is an AQL sampling inspection with a carton drop test, done before loading rather than after arrival. When the goods reach your warehouse, check that the greens still match across the ten groups, because five suppliers of five greens will not agree. Five things buyers get wrong. First, buying on colour name rather than on a physical Pantone standard: the same mid green arrives differently from every process. Second, ordering venue dressing as loose pieces when the bar needs a kit sized to a room, which usually means over-ordering the wrong item. Third, leaving branded signs and glassware until after Chinese New Year, which pushes the whole programme past the date. Fourth, treating tattoos, face paints and glitter gels as toys when they are skin contact items with their own documentation. Fifth, forgetting that battery-powered lighting and any flame-effect item bring transport documents and venue safety restrictions with them, and that a missing document can hold an entire shipment at the port. Specify the venue, the palette and the destination market at enquiry stage and each of these stays manageable.

St Patrick's wholesale questions

  • How is a venue kit sized, and what does one pub kit cover?

A venue kit is planned against the room rather than against a piece count, so one carton dresses one space. As an industry starting point, a bar kit covers a counter run of roughly ten metres plus the back bar and the ceiling above the serving area; a table kit covers the tables in the main room; an entrance kit covers one door or a short approach. A parade or crowd programme is sized by people instead, with one identity item per person. Send a floor plan, the number of tables or the number of venues you are dressing and we will convert it into kit counts, cartons and a loading plan, subject to confirmation on the actual order.

  • Can we brand the bunting, signs and glassware for our bar or retail chain?

Yes. Screen printing handles bunting, flags, banners and fabric items in one to four colours; digital printing carries full-colour or photographic artwork on signs, backdrops, props and window graphics; pad printing and heat transfer put a logo on balloons, coasters, plastic and glassware; hot stamping and foil blocking add a name, date or crest to signs, menus and boxed sets. Send vector artwork with fonts outlined and Pantone references, and allow a clean shamrock silhouette at small sizes. Branded items sit above stock minimums and are quoted against your artwork, with figures subject to confirmation on the actual order.

  • How do the tattoos and face paints differ from the toy items in compliance terms?

They sit in different families and cannot be covered by one report. Costume and novelty pieces aimed at children, such as toy hats, toy boppers and small plastic props, belong to toy rules and can be produced to EN 71-1, EN 71-2 and EN 71-3, or to CPSIA and ASTM F963 for the United States. Temporary tattoos, face stickers, face paint, glitter gels and body gems are skin contact products and belong to cosmetic and skin-contact rules, with ingredient documentation and labelling for your market. Decorative plastics and printed film fall under REACH and phthalate restrictions. Ask us for the current test report for the specific item rather than relying on a category description.

  • Our programme has to start after Chinese New Year. How late can we confirm?

Confirm before the holiday shutdown rather than after it. Factories close for one to three weeks in January or February and capacity books out on both sides of the break, so a March programme that is only confirmed when production restarts has a compressed window. Stock production runs 15 to 25 days and custom printed or branded work 30 to 45 days from sample approval, with five to fifteen days for sampling ahead of that. For 17 March, hold print approvals in advance, confirm the order before the shutdown, and keep air freight available as a contingency for late venue programmes. All these figures are industry ranges and subject to confirmation on the actual order.

  • Can lighting and candle items be shipped with the rest of the order?

They can be ordered in the same programme, but they do not travel like paper and balloons. Battery-powered lighting, including button-cell products, is electrical goods with its own safety standard plus battery transport documents and additional button-cell packaging and warning obligations. Candles, flame-effect pieces and open-flame decoration carry safety labelling, are restricted in many venues, and their transport conditions follow the carrier and the destination market, so treat them as subject to carrier and destination-market requirements and confirm before booking. Tell us the destination market and the exact items at enquiry stage and we will confirm what can be loaded together and what needs separate documentation.
