This is a fixed season with a moving date. The Islamic calendar runs about eleven days short of the solar year, so the buying window shifts earlier each year and, unlike Easter, the shift never reverses. A retailer that set its shelf in a given week this year will set it roughly eleven days earlier next year. That is the single most important planning fact in this category: buyers who plan to last year's calendar month rather than to the date itself are late. The range serves importers, supermarket and chain retail buyers, home and lifestyle wholesalers, specialist and gift retailers, and event and venue operators. Materials, and how they change the loading
Material choice here turns on two questions: whether a piece is lit, and whether it is handled. Lanterns are the largest group and the most material-sensitive. Powder-coated steel and brass-look metal give the traditional silhouette and take an antique finish, but they are dense and heavy in a carton. Wood and MDF laser-cut lanterns are lighter, print well, and suit a modern-minimal look. Acrylic panels take colour-changing LED well and survive shipping far better than glass, while glass panels give the premium read and need pulp dividers. Table linen is woven polyester, jacquard polyester, cotton blend, non-woven and velvet, and the fabric weight decides both drape and whether the print stays sharp after washing. Placemats are woven PVC, cork-backed board or embroidered fabric. Tabletop pieces are ceramic, porcelain, glass, brass-look metal and MDF, where porcelain and glass are the breakage risk that drives carton cost. Gift packaging is rigid board, corrugated board, kraft paper, laminated paper, non-woven and velvet, and for the packaging group the question is whether the bag is meant to carry weight or simply present a folded textile. Lighting is LED on copper, PVC or rubber-insulated wire, and the power option — battery, USB, plug-in or solar — is a compliance decision as much as a convenience one.
Sizes to specify against an existing planogram
Lanterns run 15 cm, 18 cm, 20 cm, 22 cm, 24 cm, 25 cm, 28 cm, 30 cm, 35 cm and 40 cm, measured as body height without the hanging ring. The 20 to 30 cm band is the shelf range and 35 to 40 cm is a floor or entry piece. Lantern strings are quoted as lantern count and wire length, typically six to ten lanterns on 2 to 3 m. Crescent and star hangings run 20 cm, 30 cm, 45 cm and 60 cm, with garlands at 1.8 m and 2 m. Table linen is specified as tablecloth 140 x 180 cm, 140 x 240 cm, 150 x 250 cm or 137 x 274 cm; runner 35 x 180 cm; placemat 30 x 45 cm; napkin 40 x 40 cm. Date and serving plates run 15 cm to 30 cm, and gift and candy boxes are quoted as length by width by depth in 5 cm steps so that they nest inside one another. Curtain lights are quoted as drop by width, commonly 3 x 2 m and 3 x 3 m. Specify against your planogram and confirm the nominated size on the order.
Packing, carton sizes and the freight consequence
Packing is quoted as an inner bag or colour box, then the export carton. Two things dominate here. The first is that this is a lighting-heavy season: lanterns, strings and curtain lights ship with batteries or a power supply in some configurations, which adds transport documentation and can restrict air freight. The second is density. Metal lanterns are heavy and small-cubed, so a carton of 30 cm lanterns frequently weighs out before it cubes out, at roughly 8 to 12 pieces per carton, while MDF and acrylic lanterns of the same size run 12 to 24 per carton. Table linen folds flat and runs 30 to 80 pieces per carton, which makes it the ideal density filler. Tableware is the heaviest group: a 15-piece porcelain tea set at 12 sets per carton approaches the carton weight ceiling and needs dividers. Gift boxes and bags are flat-packed at 100 to 300 per carton. Curtain lights run 20 to 60 per carton. The practical answer is that a mixed container balanced between lanterns, linen, packaging and tableware loads far better than any single group. How to order: MOQ, colour mixes and mixed loading
Minimum order depends on the group. Small items such as small hangings, pouches, stickers, envelopes and refill cards start around 100 to 300 pieces per design. Mid-range items such as gift bags and boxes, placemats, banners and calendars start at 200 to 500 pieces per design, or 50 to 100 sets where the item is sold as a set. Larger items such as 30 to 40 cm lanterns, porcelain tea sets and metal serving trays start at 50 to 200 pieces or 12 to 50 sets per design, because the unit value is higher and the packing cost sits in the unit. Colour mixes inside a design are normally allowed, so a 500-piece order of gift bags or hangings can be split across the range of colours you intend to display rather than committed colour by colour. Because the category sells as a coordinated palette, buyers usually lock the palette first and allocate quantity afterwards. Mixed loading across all ten groups against one set of shipping documents and one shipping date is the normal way to make the freight work, on FOB, CIF or DDP terms. Customisation: print, colour and packaging
Customisation runs at three levels. The lightest is print on stock items: your logo or greeting on banners, gift bags and boxes, envelopes, cards, placemats and packaging. The middle level is colour and finish: lantern frames, felt and fabric pieces, ribbons and packaging produced in your specified palette rather than a generic mix, plus finish choices such as gold foil, matte lamination, antique metal and satin ribbon. The deepest level is packaging: your own printed box, insert card, hang tag and barcode, and for the packaging group a fully printed bag or sleeve to your artwork. Board and paper items are the easiest to customise and take four-colour process plus one or two spot colours, with gold or silver foil as standard options. Print on fabric and non-woven runs to four colours at most. Metal and laser-cut wood pieces are the hardest, because frame colour and surface finish have to be set before coating, so minimums are far higher and a design change after coating means a re-run. Custom minimums generally start around 1,000 pieces per design for print and private label, and around 2,000 for custom outer packaging. Lead time and the seasonal production window
Stock designs usually ship in 15 to 25 days. Custom printed or private label orders run 30 to 45 days from sample approval. The planning constraint in this category is that the season moves about eleven days earlier each year, so a production slot that was comfortable last year may be tight this year. Work backwards from your shelf date: retail sets the display two to four weeks before the season, sea transit from Asia to Europe or North America is 30 to 40 days, port and inland movement is about two weeks, and sampling with one revision round is two to three weeks. Buyers also increasingly split the order, shipping the lighting and table groups first and the packaging and gifting groups with a later call-off, which means the production has to be planned as two dates rather than one. Because the season sits close to the lunar new year in some years, capacity is tighter than the calendar suggests, and the lighting groups in particular book out early. That is one further reason to confirm the power configuration before sampling, because a late change to the light specification restarts the sample clock. Place the enquiry three to four months before your shelf date. Production schedules are confirmed against your actual shelf date on the order.
Compliance, and why packaging is a separate item
Compliance here splits into five families, and the split matters because a single seasonal order often contains all five. Decorations such as lanterns, hangings, garlands, banners and decals are generally toy or household decorative items, and can be produced to EN 71-1 for mechanical safety and EN 71-2 where there is any fabric element. In the United States the equivalent route is CPSIA and ASTM F963. Lighting is an electrical product: battery, USB, plug-in and solar versions follow different rules, and the power configuration you choose decides which documents apply, so fix the power option before sampling rather than after. Anything shipping with a battery needs transport documentation before it can fly, and coin-cell products have their own handling requirements. Tableware such as plates, tea glasses, teapots, trays and serving pieces is food contact material and needs a food contact report for the destination market, such as FDA or LFGB, with additional migration checks for coated and printed food contact items. Packaging such as bags, boxes and sleeves must meet destination packaging and labelling rules, including recycled-content and material-marking requirements in several markets. Five things buyers get wrong on Ramadan and Eid
Five things buyers get wrong here. First, planning to last year's month rather than the date: the season moves about eleven days earlier each year, so last year's calendar is a late calendar. Second, leaving the battery question until the last moment: the power option on lights and pre-lit lanterns decides the compliance route and the transport documents, and changing it after sampling costs weeks. Third, treating packaging as a non-product: prayer-rug bags, gift boxes and sleeves are printed items with their own artwork, minimums, material rules and carton cube, and they are usually on the critical path to the retailer's shelf date. Fourth, loading a container of metal lanterns and porcelain tea sets and nothing else: both are heavy and small-cubed, so the load will weigh out with poor freight efficiency, and the answer is to mix in linen, packaging and hangings to balance it. Fifth, approving colour from a digital file: deep green, burgundy, gold foil and antique metal finishes all shift between screen and physical piece, so approve on a physical pre-production sample and approve early. Are tea glasses and date plates tested differently from the decorations?
Yes. Lanterns, hangings, garlands and banners are decorative or toy items and can be produced to EN 71-1 and, where fabric is involved, EN 71-2, or to CPSIA and ASTM F963 for the United States. Tea glasses, teapots, trays, serving pieces and date plates are food contact material and need a food contact report for the destination market such as FDA or LFGB, with additional migration checks where the item is coated or printed. How do we load a container when lanterns and tea sets are so heavy?
By mixing across the groups rather than shipping one group at a time. Metal lanterns and porcelain tea sets are heavy and small-cubed — roughly 8 to 12 lanterns and 12 tea sets per carton — so a container of them weighs out with poor freight efficiency, while table linen, gift packaging and hangings are light and flat-packed. Loading all ten groups together against one set of shipping documents and one shipping date balances the container. Send us the volume mix at enquiry stage and we will propose a loading plan.
