What the New Year and countdown range covers
The New Year range covers ten groups: countdown and New Year sets; champagne cups and flutes; confetti cannons and poppers; confetti wands; gold, black and silver decor; photo backdrops; streamers and confetti; headwear and novelty glasses; tabletop centrepieces; and letter and foil balloons. New Year is the most date-locked season in the calendar. Demand is concentrated on one night, 31 December, and it resets every year, which produces a pattern no other category has: an immovable sell-through date, a palette that is decided well in advance in black and gold, silver and white, and increasingly rose gold and iridescent, and a year figure that has to be designed, printed and shipped new every single season. The range is built for importers, party and novelty wholesalers, discount and variety retail, grocery and convenience chains, hospitality and venue operators, event and wedding suppliers and online sellers, and it works on FOB, CIF or DDP terms. Two things separate a good first programme from a poor one: ordering the year-coded items in a single window, and treating anything containing compressed gas or a small pyrotechnic charge as special cargo rather than as ordinary decorations.

Materials, and where the cost sits
Materials in this range are chosen for reflection and light rather than for weight, so the palette does most of the work. Balloons are natural rubber latex in chrome, pearlised and metallic finishes, or PET and aluminium laminate foil; the chrome look is a surface treatment on latex rather than a different material, so it carries a small premium rather than different performance. Confetti fill is tissue paper, metallic PET film or, increasingly, a paper and starch alternative that responds to venue rules; the fill, not the tube, is usually what a buyer wants to specify. Confetti cannons divide by mechanism: spring-loaded poppers contain no gas or charge, compressed-air cannons contain a pressurised gas cartridge, and a smaller number of pyrotechnic poppers contain a small charge and are regulated as pyrotechnic articles. Hats and headbands are card with glitter or tinsel, foil laminate, sequin fabric on mesh, felt and PET. Banners and year figures are foil-faced card, foam board, corrugated plastic and acrylic. Backdrops are sequin fabric on mesh, satin and glitter fabric, with stands in steel and aluminium. Tableware is food grade PS or PP, plain or foil coated. Glow products are polyethylene tubes with an internal ampoule, or LED units on button cells. Fringe and tassel pieces are metallised PET film and tissue.
Sizes you can specify against an existing planogram
The size ladder is the one the trade already buys. Latex balloons run at 12 inch nominal for garlands and displays, with 5 inch and 9 inch for garland filling and 18 inch and 24 inch for statement pieces; foil figures run 32 inch and 40 inch, and the 40 inch is the size that reads across a room. Confetti cannons are quoted by tube length: 12 inch and 20 inch are the common retail sizes, 40 cm covers the entry price point, and refill bags are sold by fill weight at 30 g, 50 g and 100 g. Hats are one size with an adjustable band, and headbands are one size. Letter banners run 2 m and 3 m; year cutouts 12 inch and 16 inch; standing figures 24 inch; cake toppers 5 inch. Backdrops run 1 x 2 m for a single panel and 3 x 2.5 m for a multi-panel wall, with stands adjustable to about 2 x 3 m. Tableware is quoted in capacity and diameter: flutes at 180 ml and 200 ml, stemless glasses at 250 ml, cups at 9 oz, plates at 7 inch and 9 inch, napkins at 33 x 33 cm. Fringe curtains are 1 x 2.5 m or 1 x 2 m. Table runners run 30 x 180 cm to 30 x 300 cm. Specify finished sizes rather than the words large or jumbo.
Customisation: print, colour and the year itself
Custom work here has one feature no other category shares: the year itself. Every year-coded item, from foil figures and danglers to banners, cake toppers and printed favours, has to be redrawn, approved and produced new each season, which puts an artwork deadline in front of the production deadline. A year figure that is approved late is the single most common reason a New Year programme ships short. Beyond the figure, customisation sits at three levels. The lightest is print on stock items: a logo or greeting on hats, banners, napkins, cups, favour boxes and gift bags. The middle level is the palette, which matters more here than almost anywhere because the category sells on two or three colourways rather than a broad range, so foil colour, glitter tone and balloon finish are specified rather than chosen from a generic mix. The deepest level is private label: your own colour box, header card, barcode and hang tag, which is what turns a loose hat into a retail item. Supply vector files rather than bitmaps, and approve metallised and glitter goods on the finished piece, because foil shifts tone under light. Two limits: printing on glow tubes and LED units is not practical, so customisation there means the retail packaging; and custom minimums generally start around 1,000 pieces per design for print and private label and around 2,000 for custom outer packaging. Packing, carton sizes and the freight consequence
Packing is quoted as two layers, an inner bag or colour box and then the export carton, and this range is unusually mixed: some groups are pure cube, others are dense or are special cargo. Typical formats: 12 inch confetti cannons run 24 per carton and 20 inch cannons 12 per carton, in both cases with the cartridge protected and the carton marked as required; spring-loaded poppers ship 50 per box. Glow sticks run 100 per bag and 1,000 to 2,000 per carton. LED accessories run 12 to 100 per pack and 500 to 1,000 per carton, and because they contain button cells they travel with battery documentation. Latex balloons run 100 per poly bag and 1,000 to 2,000 per carton; foil and number balloons 50 to 1,000 per carton depending on size. Party hats run 12 per pack and 288 to 576 per carton. Banner and year decor runs 12 to 200 per carton. Sequin backdrops run 1 to 12 per carton, while fringe curtains and tassel garlands are extremely light and bulky at 6 to 12 per pack and 100 to 200 per carton. Tableware runs 8 per pack and 500 to 1,000 per carton for a 9 inch plate. The practical effect is that fringe, backdrops and balloons cube out long before weight capacity, so load them with the denser tableware, gift boxes and stands to reach a sensible average density. How to order: MOQ, colour mixes and mixed loading
Minimum order depends on the group. Small accessories such as glow sticks, hair clips, favour boxes and confetti cones start around 200 to 500 pieces per design. Mid-range items such as party hats, headbands, banners, balloons and printed tableware start around 500 to 1,000 pieces per design. Set-based and higher-value items such as balloon garland kits, backdrop panels, photo booth prop sets and boxed favour kits start lower in unit count, commonly 100 to 500 sets. Custom print and private label sit above stock minimums and are quoted against artwork. Colour mixes inside a design are normally allowed, so 1,000 hats can be split across gold, silver and black, and mixed balloon colours are a standard retail bag rather than a concession. Two constraints are unusual to this category. Year-coded items have a single production window and are not reorderable at short notice, so a mid-season top-up on a year figure is rarely possible. And anything containing compressed gas, a pyrotechnic charge or lithium cells is quoted and shipped as special cargo with its own documentation, so it cannot simply be added to a general mixed load at the last minute. Mixed loading across the remaining groups against one set of shipping documents and one shipping date is the normal way to make the freight work. Lead time and the countdown calendar
Stock designs usually ship in 15 to 25 days. Custom printed or private label orders run 30 to 45 days from sample approval, and year-coded items run on the same band but sit behind an artwork deadline as well. Sampling with revision is a further two to three weeks counted from enquiry. The calendar here is fixed at one end and crowded at the other. The sell-through date is 31 December and it cannot move, while the production window for that season sits in August to October, exactly when Christmas capacity is being booked. Retail sets the aisle from mid-November, so stock is needed in the warehouse by late October. Counting backwards for a European or North American destination: about two weeks port and inland movement, 30 to 40 days sea transit, 30 to 45 days production, two to three weeks sampling and artwork approval. That places the enquiry between February and April for a normal season, with year-coded artwork approved by May and the order confirmed in early June. Orders placed in October mean air freight, and special cargo such as compressed-gas cannons and lithium-cell items is restricted on air, which is the point where a late programme stops being an inconvenience and becomes a problem. If you also buy Christmas, sequence the New Year production first. Lead times are indicative and confirmed on the actual order.
Compliance, and why a confetti cannon is not a hat
Compliance here is dominated by two things buyers treat as decorations. Confetti cannons and poppers divide by mechanism. Spring-loaded poppers contain no gas and no charge. Compressed-air cannons contain a pressurised gas cartridge and are typically classified as a compressed gas or as articles containing gas. A smaller number of poppers contain a small pyrotechnic charge and fall under pyrotechnic articles rules that differ by market. This affects packing, carton marking, documentation and available transport modes; several carriers restrict them outright. Whether a specific item may travel by air, sea or road is set by the carrier and the destination country; confirm before booking. Glow products hold a liquid chemistry inside an internal ampoule, and several markets restrict plasticisers in items children hold, so the construction and chemistry need checking. LED and light-up accessories are electrical products; button cells add battery transport documents and, in some markets, child-resistant compartment rules. Balloons are toy items for children under eight in most major markets, which brings EN 71-1, EN 71-2 and EN 71-3 or CPSIA with ASTM F963, plus nitrosamine limits under EN 71-12 that a printed balloon can fail on the ink, not the rubber. Plates, cups and flutes meant for food are food contact materials needing a report for the destination market, such as FDA or LFGB. Metallised PET fringe and foil are not kerbside recyclable, so no recyclability claim should go on the pack. Five things buyers get wrong on New Year
Five things buyers get wrong on New Year. First, ordering the year figure late. Every year-coded item has to be redrawn and approved for the season, so the artwork deadline sits ahead of the production deadline and a late approval is the most common reason a programme ships short. Second, treating cannons as ordinary cargo. Compressed-air cannons, pyrotechnic poppers and lithium-cell accessories carry their own documentation and transport limits, and a general mixed container quote does not automatically cover them; confirm with the carrier and the destination market before you commit. Third, assuming all poppers are the same. Spring-loaded, compressed-gas and pyrotechnic poppers are three different products with three different rule sets, and the wrong assumption is discovered at the port. Fourth, ignoring venue and municipal rules. A growing number of venues and cities restrict plastic confetti at public events, so a paper or starch fill option is worth carrying alongside the metallic one, and balloons should be sold with weights rather than as a release item. Fifth, planning the palette and the packaging at the same time as the year figure. Because the year changes, the artwork workflow is longer than buyers expect, and colour, packaging and the figure have to be approved together in one round rather than sequentially. That affects packing, carton marking, documentation and which modes of transport are available, and several airlines and carriers restrict them. Whether a specific item may travel by air, sea or road is set by the carrier and the destination country, so treat those requirements as controlling and confirm before booking.
Are plastic confetti, foil fringe and balloon release restricted?
The rules vary by venue and by city, and they are tightening. A growing number of venues and municipalities restrict plastic confetti at public events, which is why a paper or starch fill option is worth carrying alongside the metallic one, and intentional balloon release is restricted or banned in several jurisdictions, so balloons should be sold with weights and never as a release item. Metallised PET fringe, tassels and foil are not recyclable in normal kerbside streams, so no recyclability claim should go on the pack. Can the whole New Year range ship in one container, and how does the cube work?
Yes for the general merchandise, and mixed loading is what makes the freight work. Fringe curtains, tassel garlands, backdrops and balloons are light and bulky and cube out long before weight capacity, while tableware, gift boxes, stands and metal pieces are dense, so loading them together brings the container to a sensible average density. As a rough guide, 12 inch cannons run 24 per carton, glow sticks 1,000 to 2,000 per carton, party hats 288 to 576 per carton and a 9 inch paper plate 500 to 1,000 per carton. Special cargo such as compressed-gas cannons and lithium-cell items carries its own documentation and loading rules.
