The tableware range covers ten groups: paper plates from 7 inch to 10 inch, paper cups at 9 oz, paper napkins from 30 x 30 cm to 40 x 60 cm, paper bowls from 8 oz to 16 oz, cutlery in wood, bamboo, PSM and CPLA, straws in paper and PLA, table covers in PE, non-woven and paper, tableware sets for 4, 8 and 16 people, fruit picks and toothpicks, and trash bags from 30 x 35 cm to 70 x 90 cm. It is built for importers, food service distributors, party wholesalers, supermarket and discount chains, catering suppliers and event companies, and it works on FOB, CIF or DDP terms. Disposable tableware differs from a decoration programme in two ways that shape everything below. First, it is food contact material, so the document set is the gate that decides whether an order can land at all — print and price come second. Second, it is heavy and dense: a container of plates and bowls reaches its payload limit while the doors still look half empty. That is why the range is designed to load alongside light decoration lines such as balloons, paper fans and garlands, and why compliance and carton planning are given more room here than the product list itself.

Materials, and where the price difference comes from
Paper tableware is a paper specification before it is a design, and the specification is what buyers should compare. Board weight is the first variable: plates usually run 250 to 350 gsm, and the difference between a 250 gsm and a 350 gsm plate is not cosmetic — it is stiffness, load bearing and how the plate feels in the hand, which is exactly why the price gap between two apparently identical plates exists. Below about 250 gsm a 9 inch plate needs support; above 300 gsm it stands up to a full meal. The second variable is the barrier. PE extrusion coating gives moisture and grease resistance and is the standard for wet and oily food; uncoated board trades that resistance for a plastic-free position, and it is the version European retail increasingly specifies, but it needs a shorter service time and is not the right choice for gravy or curry. Beyond paper the material ladder runs bamboo, birchwood, sugarcane bagasse, CPLA for heat-resistant cutlery, PLA for cold cups and clear containers, and paper or PLA straws. Each substitute has its own heat ceiling, so match the material to the dish rather than to the label.
Sizes you can specify against your existing planogram
The size ladder is the one the market already buys, so you can specify against your existing planogram. Plates: 6 inch and 7 inch dessert, 8, 9 and 10 inch main, with 9 inch the volume size in retail multipacks. Bowls: 12 oz, 16 oz and 24 oz. Cups: 4, 6 and 8 oz single wall for hot drinks, 8, 12 and 16 oz in double wall or ripple wall, 9, 12 and 16 oz cold cups, and soup cups at 16, 26 and 32 oz. Lids are quoted by diameter — 80 mm and 90 mm cover the common cup range — and cold dome lids are specified separately because they take a straw hole. Straws: 5 mm cocktail, 6 mm standard, 8 mm for shakes, 10 mm jumbo for smoothies and bubble tea, with paper straws built 3-ply to hold up in a cold drink. Napkins: 24 x 24 cm cocktail, 33 x 33 cm lunch, 40 x 40 cm dinner. Placemats: 30 x 40 cm. Table covers: 137 x 274 cm for six to eight seats, or 1.2 m x 25 m rolls for catering. Takeaway containers: 500, 750 and 1000 ml kraft boxes, 16 to 32 oz soup and noodle formats, and 7, 9 and 12 inch pizza boxes. Cake boards: 8, 10 and 12 inch.
Packing, carton weights and the freight consequence
Packing is quoted as two layers: an inner bag or shrink pack, then the export carton. Tableware is dense, and that changes the freight arithmetic. A carton of 9 inch paper plates usually runs about 500 pieces at roughly 10 to 13 kg; a carton of bagasse or kraft takeaway containers is heavier again, in the 12 to 16 kg bracket; cutlery and straws run light but compress into small cartons; napkins are the bulkiest line in the range before they are pressed and banded. The consequence is that a container of tableware is weight-limited, not volume-limited. A 40 ft high cube has a payload limit of roughly 26 to 28 tonnes, and a full tableware load can reach that while still showing empty space above the pallets. That is the reason to mix this category with light decoration cargo — balloons, paper fans, garlands and other bulky lines cube out long before they weigh out, and loading them above and around dense tableware lifts the average container density to a sensible level at no extra freight cost. How to order: MOQ, colour mixes and mixed loading
Minimum order depends on the group, not on the order value. Stock paper plates, bowls, napkins and printed party sets commonly start around 100 to 500 pieces per design. Cups, containers and takeaway formats start around 500 to 1,000 pieces per size, because they are made in fixed cutting and forming runs. Cutlery and straws start lower in units but are usually quoted per carton of 1,000 to 5,000 pieces. Bagasse, bamboo and CPLA items start around 500 to 1,000 pieces per item, since moulds are shared across a size family rather than across a design. Colour mixes inside a design are normally allowed, so a 1,000 piece order can be split across two or three prints, or across natural and white board, instead of being committed print by print. Matched sets — plate, cup and napkin in one pack — are quoted per set, commonly from 500 to 1,000 sets, and they are the fastest way to open a retail listing because one SKU covers a whole table. Mixed loading across all ten groups against one set of shipping documents is the normal way to make the freight work, on FOB, CIF or DDP terms.
Customisation: print, material and packaging
Custom work covers three levels. The lightest is artwork print on stock items: your logo or greeting on plates, cups, napkins, table covers and takeaway boxes. Print method is chosen by run length and substrate rather than by preference — flexographic print suits long runs of one or two colours on kraft board, offset gives finer detail and more colours on white board, and foil or embossed work is a separate pass with its own minimum. On food contact items, ink and coating choice is itself a compliance decision, because the print sits on the outside while the food side stays bare, and that has to be stated on the specification rather than assumed. The middle level is material and colour change: white, natural kraft or unbleached board, PE coated or plastic-free, and a fixed retail palette applied across the range. The deepest level is packaging: shrink wrap count, printed sleeve, colour box, insert card and barcode, which is what turns a stock carton into a retail SKU. Custom minimums sit above stock minimums and generally start around 5,000 pieces per design for printed paper goods, and higher again for custom die-cut shapes. Lead time and the food service ordering cycle
Stock designs usually ship in 15 to 25 days. Custom printed or private label orders run 30 to 45 days, counted from sample approval rather than from enquiry, and a large mixed programme with several print designs can extend to around 45 days. Two things push tableware lead times out relative to decorations. The first is the document set: food contact testing for migration and heavy metal content has to be arranged alongside production, and where the destination market requires a specific report, that sits on the critical path rather than beside it. The second is print approval, because paper goods are printed in long runs and a colour change after approval wastes the run — which is why sign-off has to be against a physical printed sample. Food service and catering buyers usually restock through the year rather than against one season, and stock lines are the right answer for that pattern. Retail and party tableware is seasonal, with the European and North American shelf window in spring and summer, so plan backwards from your shelf date: allow 30 to 45 days production, 30 to 40 days sea transit, and two weeks for port and inland movement.
Compliance: food contact, and why it is a different report family
Compliance is the real gate in this category, and it is a completely different report family from toys and decorations. Plates, bowls, cups, cutlery, straws, napkins and takeaway containers are food contact materials. For the European Union the framework is Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, and the plastic layer — a PE coating or a PLA lining — is assessed against Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, which also requires a written Declaration of Compliance. In the German market, LFGB with the BfR Recommendation for paper and board is the document most European retail buyers ask for. For the United States the equivalent is FDA food contact clearance under 21 CFR. The documents are overall migration and specific migration tests, heavy metal content and colour fastness on printed items. None of this overlaps with EN 71: a toy safety report does not cover a paper plate, and a food contact report does not cover a hat. The other regulatory driver is the EU single-use plastics directive, Directive (EU) 2019/904, which restricts single-use plastic cutlery, plates, straws and stirrers, and expanded polystyrene food containers. It has moved European buyers from PE coated board towards uncoated, plastic-free and moulded fibre formats. Classification and transposition vary by market, so tell us the destination and ask for the reports available for the specific item.
Five things buyers get wrong on disposable tableware
Five things buyers get wrong on disposable tableware. First, comparing on price per piece instead of on grams per square metre: two 9 inch plates can differ by 100 gsm, and that difference is what the end customer feels when a plate bends under a roast chicken — specify the board weight first and compare afterwards. Second, treating a toy safety report as evidence for a plate: food contact and toy safety are separate families, and a retail buyer will ask for the food contact document per SKU. Third, buying coated board for a market that has moved plastic-free: PE coating handles wet and oily food better, but several European programmes now specify uncoated, and switching after artwork approval means new sampling and a longer lead time. Fourth, loading a container with tableware only: it is dense cargo, so it hits the payload limit while the cube is still empty, and mixing in balloons, garlands and other light decoration lines is what raises the value carried per container. Fifth, ignoring lid and cup compatibility: an 80 mm lid does not fit a 90 mm cup, and a mismatched lid is the single most common complaint in this category.

What is the difference between PE coated and plastic-free tableware?
It is a barrier decision. PE extrusion coating gives a moisture and grease barrier, so a coated plate or bowl handles oily, saucy and hot food and holds its shape for longer. Uncoated board gives up some of that resistance in exchange for a plastic-free position, which is what a growing share of European retail programmes now specifies. Practically, uncoated suits dry and short-service foods, coated suits wet and oily ones. On cold cups the equivalent choice is PE coating versus a PLA lining, which is compostable but has a lower heat ceiling. Specify the food and the service time and we will advise which one to quote.

How does the EU single-use plastics directive affect what we can buy?
Directive (EU) 2019/904 restricts a defined list of single-use plastic items, and that list includes cutlery, plates, straws and stirrers and expanded polystyrene food and beverage containers. In practice European buyers have responded by moving to uncoated or plastic-free board, moulded fibre such as bagasse, and wood or bamboo for cutlery, and by asking for the coating specification before the design.
